Meet Beck Harmon of BECK'S PEACE, a Christian Romance Book

Tell us your name and a little bit about yourself.

I’m Beck Harmon, the middle of the Harmon siblings, younger than my twin, Burk, by a couple minutes. The one who doesn’t have his act together yet. The prodigal. I kinda lost myself for a while, who I was, what I believed in. Took me ten years, but I finally found my way home.

Tell us about where you live and why you choose to live there.

Anywhere I can find a job. At least, that’s how it’s been for the last decade. But since I came home for my sister’s wedding, that whisper to stay is gaining traction and digging in. And besides, Savvy’s here.

What is a quirk of your personality that most people wouldn’t know?

I reckon I have a few quirks. Don’t we all? When stress hits, I tend to run to the loudest, noisiest place I can find to drown out that voice in my head. The one that screams I’m just like my father. Since coming back home, though, I’ve noticed that the voice is fading. Might have something to do with a certain golden haired beauty…

Over the years, I’ve worked several jobs, but the one I enjoy most? Remodels. Crazy, isn’t it? It’s a sweaty, dirty job, but I’m good at visualizing the beauty beneath the rubble and restoring a space to the treasure it once was.

What obstacles did you have to overcome to reach your happily-ever-after?

Might’ve saved some time if you’d asked what we didn’t have to overcome. First, God had to hit me over the head with a sledge hammer to get me to accept that I am my own person, that my life isn’t determined by my father's choices. As if that wasn’t enough, I had to prove to Savvy that I wouldn’t take off again when things got rough. That got a little dicey when I was offered a job a couple hours away, and it sure didn’t help that there was a hometown veterinarian circling like a vulture, waiting to swoop in and make things permanent with her.

Tell us about your special lady. What makes her special?

She’s honest, doesn’t play games like a lot of women I’ve known. She’s a firefighter, feels called to save lives, and she’s strong physically and spiritually. Her sweet, humble spirit draws me like a bee to honey. Her eyes mesmerize me, always have. Hazel, but when she looks at me, they seem to transform from brownish gold to emerald, melting-like, as if I’m some dreamy guy. Makes me want to be that man for her.

The first time you saw her, what did you think? Did you like her immediately, or did she have to grow on you?

Immediately, no question. In all the years I was gone, I never stopped loving her. That love was what kept me away, but it was also love that brought me back home.

Tell us your name and a little bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Savvy McCord. My day job, if you could call it that, is firefighting, and I teach second graders at my church.

Tell us about where you live and why you choose to live there.

I live in the country just outside Harrison, North Carolina. Rori Harmon is my closest neighbor and my best friend since elementary school. I hung out at her house more than I lived in mine. My parents, well, we didn’t have the best relationship. Not since my sister died.

I almost moved away after Beck left, but I just knew that eventually, he would come back.

What is a quirk of your personality that most people wouldn’t know?

Most of the time, I wear pants and long sleeves to cover the scars on my arms and legs from the same gas explosion that killed my sister. Prevents the gawkers and rude questions. Mostly.

What obstacles did you have to overcome to reach your happily-ever-after?

You mean besides Beck actually coming home, right? LOL. Well, Beck surprised me by showing up at Rori’s wedding, and my date, Corbin, the local vet, wasn’t exactly thrilled. Corbin knew it was over then. But the biggest issue? Whether Beck was back home for good or just stopping through.

Tell us about your knight in shining armor. What makes him special?

When we were kids, he was always trying to make me feel better about my home life. He was always finding ways to make me laugh when I was down. But now? Can you believe I stumbled upon him at the hospital? I’d stopped by to visit Maria, a teenager we pulled out of a house fire. He was amazing. Kind and gentle, and trying to make her feel better about her scars. Did you know he was the one who brainstormed “Savvy Scars,” a support group for teen burn survivors? As if that weren’t enough, he fixed my house after a storm rolled through while I was working, surprised me with a picnic dinner at the fire station, and gifted me with Purrtygirl, a homeless kitten. And did I mention the man can kiss? Oy!

But none of that compares with his newfound faith and how he’s always whispering that I’m beautiful...

Haha. That’s kind of a trick question. We grew up together, so a little of both, I guess. It just took him a few years and much life experience to get to the same point. But, that’s OK because now he’s home to stay.

The Best Part of Traveling is...

While our two sons were young, we lived in Florida, where seasons and cooler temperatures were non-existent. So, every winter break we loaded the car with heavy coats, sleds, and Christmas presents, and traveled to some faraway state, hoping to find snow.

After arriving at our destination, we would tuck all the presents under a miniature artificial tree and turn on the sparkling lights. Then, we’d snuggle in front of the fireplace and cheer for our favorite football teams or watch a movie, sipping hot chocolate loaded with whipped cream and sprinkles. In the morning, we’d all scramble to the window to see if it had snowed during the night. Nothing beat that first sight of freshly fallen snow, clean and pure, and shimmering like diamonds.

Now that hubby and I are empty nesters, we travel quite a bit more than we did when the kids were young. We’ve taken to cruising every year and have enjoyed visiting Italy, France, Croatia, Spain, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Netherlands, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. We’ve tried new foods, explored new cultures, experienced unfamiliar situations, deciphered foreign languages, and encountered wonderful people along the way.

As much as I love traveling, the best part for me is…wait for it, wait for it…

Coming home. That sweet feeling that wells up as I walk in the door. Home, where everything is familiar, where our dog roams the yard without a leash, where I don’t need to pull up a map on my cellphone. Home, to a soft mattress and pillows shaped just the way I need them, coffee just the way I like it, and local restaurants with food and words I recognize. Home, to precious family nearby, where we don’t have to rely on Internet connections to chat or Google Hangouts to soak in their sweet faces. Home, to the comfort of a routine because that’s the way I roll.

Beck Harmon, fictional hero of Beck's Peace, left home and wandered for ten years, seeking peace over his father’s death. Our motivation might be different, but he would say the same about his travels. The best part was coming home.

Annoying or Divine? You choose...

It's been a crazy couple of weeks. I just wrapped up my Christmas novella, Christmas in the Rink, and behold! Edits for two other books, Beck's Peace and Burk's Surrender, arrived in my inbox within seconds of each other. 

I expected Beck's Peace, but I was rather surprised to receive both books. Since I'm fairly single-minded, I don't usually bounce back and forth between books, especially when they feature identical twin heroes, Beck and Burk. Hello! Anybody see a problem here? Although these twin heroes, polar opposites, were so much fun to write, it was torture keeping them straight. I was afraid that somewhere along the way Burk would end up romancing Beck's heroine or vice versa.

Typically, I stop whatever I'm working on to dig into edits, but last weekend, we expected our house to be bursting-at-the-seams with family. My parents were coming, and it was the last opportunity to visit with them before they made the trek back to AK for the summer. Also, several of  our male family members were excited about heading to the NASCAR race in Martinsville, and our house made the perfect landing spot for all.

So what to do? Clean and shop for a full house or work on edits for two books?

For me, the decision wasn't too hard. Family takes precedence, and I had ten days to turn in the edits. But what if I was backed up against a tight deadline and losing a couple days in my schedule really mattered? 

Well, don't you know that very same weekend our awesome pastor preached on...divine interruptions. Kinda timely, don't you think? I won't go into details of the message, but later that week God really hammered me with this particular passage (and it wasn't even part of the sermon!). 

Do I consider the interruptions in my daily work schedule as God-appointed? Or am I more exasperated that I'm not reaching my word count goal? Ouch.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying schedules and daily goals are a bad thing. After all, God prefers organization over chaos. (1 Cor 14:33) But, since God sees the big forever picture, His plans for my day might be a bit different than mine, and if I'm praying for God to direct my path, shouldn't I be open to the opportunities he plants in front of me? 

You know how amazing God is? He stretched my time as only He can do, allowing me to accomplish all the tasks, and my editor received the edits way ahead of schedule.

God, help me to acknowledge that You order my day, not me, and to recognize these interruptions as divine appointments. Fill me with Your joy, and allow me to be a beacon for You.
